So I have had a bit of a break from the blog over Christmas but I’m back now and got some great topics to write about.

It’s all about mucky paws today! As you know, I have three miniature dachshunds who are very close to the ground meaning they get absolutely filthy even on a tarmac footpath.

Dogs are pretty good at cleaning themselves but when they’re smothered in mud, a bath is definitely in order.

Over winter I have found myself washing them more and more, something I really don’t like doing. Not because I cant be bothered but because I feel its not good for their coats. Like humans, they have natural oils in their coats and when washed too often, these are destroyed which is detrimental to their coats. Moreover, the more we wash our pooches, it may lead to damaged hair follicles, irritated skin or increased risk of infection.

I’ve trialed a few shampoos and thought I would share them with you.

Wild Olive Dog Soap

I’ve used this quite a bit and its absolutely great. It comes in a small square bar and costs about £3.50. I found this in a little local shop in Ripon and thought I would try it and it’s been so worth it. I have the Tea Tree, Eucalyptus and Clove one and I love it; natural, ethical and kind to the skin. The only downside I have found is due to it being a bar, it obviously stays wet after use so it’s slightly difficult to store.

For All Dog Kind 2-in-1 Conditioning Shampoo

I have followed this company on Instagram for some time now and I’m guilty of falling for good marketing. That said, I did my research! I like their products, as they’re natural, ethical and actually work. The 2-in-1 Conditioning Shampoo is great for us, as mine really don’t like being bathed, so I can use one product on them with minimal faff. They smell gorgeous (mandarin and grapefruit) and it cleans the pooches up lovely, leaving them smelling so fresh. They do have other products that I am yet to try as I’ve been so happy with this one but they do a great bundle package for £45 (tempting). The price of this product is £9.99 for 250ml.

Pet Head Dirty Talk Shampoo

I have used this a few times but it’s not one of my favourites. The only reason is that I didn’t find that they smelt that great after. I’m not too bothered about them smelling incredible for ages but the product smells fairly chemically. It definitely cleaned them up so it does what it says on the tin but just not for me. It’s £9.99 for 475ml so you do get a lot for your money.

Dogwood Deep Cleanse Shampoo

I bought this from my local Pets Corner shop (£12.99 for 250ml), which I often visit as the staff are lovely and they have some great things in there. It’s is 100% natural and sustainable and aims to improve skin condition as well as clean those muddy paws. It’s super gentle on their skin, not stripping their coats of the natural oils meaning regular use is relatively ok. I love how this smells and I really enjoy using it.

Tropiclean Oatmeal & Tea Tree Shampoo

I am not sure if any of you have visited waitrosepet.com before but it’s pretty great. They have such a good variety of products from beds and blankets to shampoo and brushes, definitely worth a look. They stock this lovely shampoo which really helps with flaky, dry and sensitive skin. One of my pooches had a problem with her tummy after being on wet and muddy walks and the vet prescribed her hibiscrub. This worked fine but I felt I could get something a bit kinder on the skin, so researched options and the Tropiclean shampoo seemed a good one to go for. At £7.99 for 355ml it doesn’t come at a great cost either especially as you only need a small amount.
